Destination Guide

Japan offers strong opportunities in banking, technology, manufacturing, consulting, education, healthcare, tourism and international business, especially in Tokyo, Osaka, Yokohama and Nagoya. Workplace culture values punctuality, preparation, respect, teamwork and careful attention to detail. English is useful in multinational companies, but Japanese ability greatly improves career and daily-life options. Tokyo provides extensive professional opportunities, efficient public transport and a highly convenient lifestyle, although housing and commuting can be expensive. Osaka and regional cities generally offer a more relaxed pace and lower living costs. Foreign professionals normally need an appropriate work visa, usually sponsored by an employer; highly skilled workers may qualify for a points-based visa with faster settlement options. Before relocating, arrange a residence card, housing, health insurance, banking and tax registration. Japan has excellent public services and safety, but newcomers should plan for earthquakes, humid summers and language-related challenges.
