Destination Guide

Hong Kong offers strong opportunities in banking, asset management, insurance, fintech, professional services, technology and international trade. Financial-services professionals benefit from a dense employer market, regional headquarters and access to clients across mainland China and Asia-Pacific. The culture is fast-paced, international and business-oriented, combining Cantonese and Chinese traditions with substantial expatriate influence. Life includes excellent public transport, diverse restaurants, shopping, hiking trails and beaches, although housing is expensive and living space is limited. English is widely used in business; Cantonese is valuable for local integration, while Mandarin can help with mainland-related work. Most foreign professionals need an employment visa sponsored by an approved employer, generally through the General Employment Policy, with proof of qualifications, a genuine job and market-level compensation. Dependants may usually accompany approved visa holders. New arrivals should budget for rent, deposits, healthcare, schooling if relevant and relocation costs.
