Destination Guide

Labuan is Malaysia’s federal island territory off the coast of Sabah and a significant regional oil and gas centre. Job opportunities are strongest in offshore services, drilling, completions, marine support, logistics, engineering, maintenance, finance and administration. The island has a relaxed, multicultural lifestyle, affordable accommodation compared with Kuala Lumpur, seafood restaurants, beaches and easy access to Kota Kinabalu and Brunei. English is widely used in business, while Malay is the national language; Malay, Chinese and indigenous communities contribute to the local culture. New employees should expect humid tropical weather, occasional heavy rain and a work routine shaped by field rotations. Foreign workers generally need employer-sponsored employment approval and an Employment Pass or relevant work authorization before starting work. Relocating candidates should arrange medical checks, housing, banking, insurance and transport early. Labuan is compact, so a motorcycle or car can be useful, although basic services are readily accessible.
