Company Info

Rakuten Group, headquartered in Tokyo, is one of Japan's largest internet and technology companies. Founded in 1997, it operates a broad ecosystem spanning e-commerce, fintech, mobile communications, digital content, travel, advertising, and other online services. Rakuten's strategy is to connect these businesses through a shared membership, loyalty, and data platform, giving customers access to multiple services through one ecosystem. The company has a strong international presence and employs people from many countries, making English useful in numerous corporate and technology roles, although Japanese is important for many positions in Japan. Rakuten is known for its fast-moving, entrepreneurial culture and its emphasis on customer experience, innovation, and cross-business collaboration. UX and platform strategy professionals can influence products used by millions of customers across Japan and international markets.

Destination Guide

Japan offers strong opportunities in technology, e-commerce, fintech, telecommunications, design, engineering, hospitality, and international business, especially in Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya, and Fukuoka. Workplace culture values punctuality, preparation, teamwork, and respect for seniority, while global companies may have more flexible and English-friendly environments. Daily life is generally safe, efficient, and convenient, with excellent public transportation, reliable services, and diverse food and entertainment. Tokyo is exciting but expensive; regional cities offer lower housing costs and a slower pace. Non-Japanese professionals usually need an appropriate work visa, commonly the Engineer/Specialist in Humanities/International Services visa, supported by their employer. Highly skilled professionals may qualify for a points-based visa with faster permanent-residency routes. Relocation normally involves housing, residence registration, health insurance, banking, and tax procedures. Learning practical Japanese greatly helps with work and everyday life.
