Destination Guide

Hong Kong offers strong opportunities in hotels, restaurants, retail, finance, technology, logistics and professional services. Hospitality work is concentrated around Hong Kong Island, Kowloon, the airport and resort areas, with international hotels often recruiting housekeeping, food and beverage and guest-service staff. The culture combines Cantonese traditions, international influences, efficient public transport and a fast-paced working environment. Lifestyle options range from dense urban neighbourhoods and vibrant dining to beaches, hiking trails and outlying islands. Most overseas employees need a work visa sponsored by an employer; the usual route requires a confirmed job, suitable qualifications or experience and proof that the role cannot readily be filled locally. Dependants may be eligible for visas. Rent can be high, so applicants should confirm salary, service charge, accommodation, meals, transport and medical benefits before relocating. Cantonese is useful, while English is widely used in hotels.
