Destination Guide

Penang is one of Malaysia’s best-known island destinations and a practical location for hospitality professionals. Job opportunities are strongest in hotels, resorts, restaurants, tourism, healthcare, retail, education and shared services, especially around George Town and Batu Ferringhi. The island blends Malay, Chinese, Indian and international influences, reflected in its festivals, heritage buildings and renowned street food. Daily life is generally relaxed, with beaches, hiking, cafés and a lively cultural scene, although traffic and humidity can be challenging. Foreign hires normally need an employment pass sponsored by the employer; approval and eligibility depend on salary, qualifications and the position. Before relocating, confirm accommodation, medical coverage, taxes and transport arrangements with Shangri-La. George Town offers more urban conveniences, while the resort coast provides a quieter lifestyle but may require commuting.
