Destination Guide

Indonesia offers varied opportunities across its many islands. Jakarta, on Java, is the country’s main commercial centre and provides the strongest market for hotel sales, finance, technology and multinational companies. Bali is especially attractive for hospitality, tourism, events and wellness careers, while Batam, Lombok, Surabaya and destinations in eastern Indonesia offer opportunities in resorts, manufacturing, logistics and marine tourism. Life ranges from fast-paced urban living to relaxed coastal communities. Indonesian culture values hospitality, family, respect and religious diversity; learning Bahasa Indonesia is highly useful. International employees normally need an employer-sponsored work permit and appropriate limited-stay visa, arranged before working. Requirements and costs vary, so applicants should confirm current rules with the employer and Indonesian immigration authorities. Jakarta has extensive transport and services but traffic and flooding can be challenging. Relocation planning should include housing, healthcare, insurance, taxes and local registration.
