Destination Guide

Hong Kong offers strong opportunities in hospitality, finance, tourism, retail, technology and professional services, with major employers concentrated on Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and the New Territories. The culture blends Chinese traditions with international influences; Cantonese is widely spoken, while English is common in business and hotels. Life is fast-paced, highly connected and convenient, with excellent public transport, varied dining, shopping, hiking and beaches. Rents can be high, especially near central business districts, so many residents live in Kowloon or the New Territories and commute. Foreign professionals generally need an approved employment visa before starting work. The employer normally supports the application, while applicants provide qualifications, experience and a valid employment contract. Relocating employees should arrange accommodation, medical coverage, banking and an identity card after arrival. Hong Kong is not usually described as an island destination overall, but Hong Kong Island is one of its principal urban areas.
