Destination Guide

Malaysia offers varied opportunities in banking, shared services, technology, manufacturing, tourism and professional services. Kuala Lumpur is the main financial and corporate hub, while Penang, Johor and Kuching provide growing regional opportunities. The country combines Malay, Chinese, Indian and indigenous cultures, with festivals, varied cuisine and generally welcoming communities. Lifestyle costs are usually lower than in Singapore, although housing in central Kuala Lumpur and popular island destinations can be expensive. Malaysia also offers beaches, rainforests and island escapes such as Langkawi, Penang, Tioman and the islands of Sabah and Sarawak. Foreign professionals normally require employer-sponsored permission, commonly an Employment Pass; the employer handles much of the application process. Qualifications, salary thresholds and approval rules apply, and dependants may need related passes. Kuching offers a relaxed lifestyle, access to Borneo’s nature and a lower cost base than Kuala Lumpur, but has a smaller corporate job market.
