Destination Guide

Sri Lanka offers engineering and technical opportunities in apparel manufacturing, electronics, food processing, logistics, technology, renewable energy and industrial services, with Colombo and the Western Province hosting many large employers. The island combines tropical beaches, historic cities, tea country, wildlife and a relaxed social lifestyle. Sinhala and Tamil are widely used, while English is common in business. Living costs are generally lower than in many international cities, although Colombo rents and imported goods can be comparatively expensive. Foreign nationals normally need an appropriate employment or residence visa arranged with employer support before working; tourist status should not be used for employment. Relocating employees should confirm sponsorship, salary taxation, healthcare, accommodation and contract terms in advance. Public transport is extensive, and private services are readily available around Colombo. Local customs, religious diversity, modest dress at temples and respect for community traditions are important.
