Destination Guide

For offshore and rig workers, island hubs such as Malta, Cyprus, Trinidad, Singapore or the Canary Islands can serve as useful bases for crew changes, training and relocation. Job opportunities are strongest in marine engineering, drilling support, vessel operations, maintenance, catering, safety and logistics. Island communities are usually multicultural, practical and accustomed to expatriate workers. Lifestyle ranges from quiet coastal living to busy port-city environments, with warm weather, outdoor activities and strong maritime networks. Costs vary considerably, especially for housing and transport. Offshore rotations often provide accommodation and meals during assignments, while workers cover living costs between trips. Visa rules depend on nationality and contract: short stays, work permits, seafarer transit visas or offshore-entry documentation may apply. Arrange medical checks, STCW certificates, police clearance, insurance and travel documents early, and confirm whether the employer handles flights, visas and accommodation before relocating.
