Destination Guide

Hong Kong is a compact international city with a strong hospitality, tourism, retail and food-and-beverage sector, creating opportunities in hotels, restaurants, catering and visitor services. Cantonese is the local language, while English and Mandarin are widely used in workplaces. The culture combines Chinese traditions with international influences, and life is energetic, convenient and highly urban, with excellent public transport, varied dining, hiking trails and beaches. Housing is expensive, so staff accommodation or a housing allowance can be important. Foreign workers generally need an appropriate employment visa sponsored by an employer before starting work; requirements depend on nationality, qualifications and the contract. Applicants should confirm visa eligibility, medical or document requirements and whether the employer provides meals, accommodation, insurance and transport. Hong Kong uses the Hong Kong dollar and has a subtropical climate with hot, humid summers and cooler winters.
