Destination Guide

Malaysia offers varied island lifestyles and hospitality opportunities, particularly in Penang, Langkawi, Redang, Perhentian, Tioman, and Borneo’s coastal resorts. Jobs are available in hotel engineering, facilities, food and beverage, housekeeping, diving, guest services, and tourism management. Penang combines heritage culture, excellent food, urban conveniences, and a strong expatriate community, while Langkawi provides a quieter resort lifestyle with beaches, nature, and tourism-focused employment. Local culture is multicultural, with Malay, Chinese, Indian, and Indigenous influences; modest dress and respect for religious customs are appreciated. Living costs vary, with resort islands often having higher transport and grocery expenses. Foreign employees generally require an employer-sponsored Employment Pass or appropriate work authorization before starting work. Employers commonly assist with permits, accommodation, flights, and relocation, but benefits differ. Reliable planning is important because ferry and flight access can be seasonal.
