Destination Guide

Malaysia offers opportunities in hotels, resorts, restaurants, tourism, wellness and events, particularly in Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Langkawi, Kota Kinabalu and other coastal destinations. Langkawi is the country’s best-known resort island, while Penang combines heritage culture, food and a lively urban lifestyle. Malaysian workplaces are multicultural, with Malay, Chinese, Indian and international communities; English is widely used in hospitality, alongside Bahasa Malaysia. Life is generally affordable compared with many major international cities, although accommodation costs vary by resort location. Employees usually enjoy tropical weather, diverse food, beaches and outdoor activities, but should prepare for heat and monsoon seasons. Foreign nationals normally need an employment pass sponsored and arranged by the employer before starting work. Relocation commonly involves passport checks, medical or immigration documentation and proof of qualifications. Confirm visa terms, housing, transport and benefits directly with Shangri-La before accepting an offer.
