Destination Guide

Hong Kong offers strong opportunities in hospitality, finance, retail, technology, logistics and professional services. Accountants can find roles with hotels, property groups, banks, multinational companies and local businesses, although competition is high and employers often value English, Cantonese or Mandarin, recognised qualifications and local experience. The culture combines Chinese traditions with international influences, efficient public services and a fast-paced working style. Lifestyle options range from skyscrapers, restaurants and shopping to beaches, hiking trails and outlying islands. Housing is expensive, especially on Hong Kong Island and Kowloon, so many newcomers share accommodation or live in the New Territories. Most overseas professionals need an employment visa sponsored by a local employer; applications generally require a confirmed job, suitable qualifications and proof of experience. Dependants may usually apply for visas after approval. Relocation planning should include housing, health insurance, banking, transport and tax arrangements.
