Destination Guide

Malaysia offers varied opportunities in hotels, resorts, restaurants, tourism, retail, education, technology and healthcare. Island destinations such as Langkawi, Penang, Redang, Perhentian, Tioman and Borneo’s coastal areas provide hospitality work, especially during busy travel seasons. Malaysian culture combines Malay, Chinese, Indian and indigenous traditions, with festivals, religious diversity and excellent food. Lifestyle costs are moderate outside Kuala Lumpur; island living is relaxed but transport, healthcare and shopping can be more limited. Foreign employees normally need an approved employment pass sponsored by the employer before starting work. Requirements depend on nationality, salary, qualifications and role, and working without authorisation is not permitted. Relocating staff should confirm accommodation, flights, insurance, tax obligations and contract benefits. English is widely used in tourism, while Malay is the national language. Humid weather, monsoon seasons and occasional ferry or flight disruptions should be considered when choosing an island posting.
