Destination Guide

Malaysia offers varied opportunities in hospitality, finance, technology, education, healthcare, manufacturing and tourism. Major employment centres include Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Johor Bahru, Kota Kinabalu and resort islands such as Langkawi, Tioman and Redang. The culture is multicultural, shaped by Malay, Chinese, Indian and indigenous communities, with Bahasa Malaysia as the official language and English widely used in business and hotels. Lifestyle ranges from busy city living to relaxed coastal communities, with generally affordable food, strong public transport in major cities and warm tropical weather year-round. Foreign workers normally need an employment pass or other employer-sponsored permit, and should not begin work before approval. Relocation costs, housing, medical insurance and tax registration should be confirmed with the employer. Malaysia is welcoming, but island locations can have fewer services and seasonal job patterns than the mainland.
