Destination Guide

Hong Kong offers strong employment opportunities in hotels, restaurants, tourism, retail, finance, technology and professional services. The culture combines Chinese traditions, Cantonese hospitality and an international outlook; English is widely used in business, while Cantonese is valuable in customer-facing roles. Life is energetic and convenient, with efficient public transport, dense urban neighbourhoods, shopping, hiking trails, beaches and a varied dining scene. Housing can be expensive, so shared accommodation or employer-provided staff housing may be important. Foreign workers generally need an approved employment visa before starting work, with the employer sponsoring the application and demonstrating a genuine position. Applicants should check current Immigration Department requirements, qualifications and contract conditions. Hong Kong is a city and territory rather than a single island, although Hong Kong Island is one of its best-known areas.
