Destination Guide

Malaysia offers opportunities in hotels, resorts, restaurants, tourism, retail, technology and shared services. Popular island destinations such as Langkawi, Penang, Tioman, Redang and Sabah’s coastal islands provide a relaxed lifestyle, beaches, diving and strong hospitality demand, although many corporate roles are based in Kuala Lumpur or other mainland cities. Malaysian culture is multicultural, with Malay, Chinese, Indian and indigenous influences; English is widely used in tourism and business, while learning basic Malay is helpful. Living costs vary considerably, with resort islands often charging more for housing and imported goods. Foreign nationals normally need an employer-sponsored Employment Pass, and they should not begin work before approval. Employers generally handle much of the application process, but passport validity, qualifications, medical checks and supporting documents may be required. Research accommodation, transport, healthcare, weather and seasonal tourism patterns before relocating.
