Destination Guide

Singapore is a compact, highly connected island city with strong opportunities in education, technology, finance, healthcare, logistics, research and professional services. English is widely used at work, while Mandarin, Malay and Tamil are also official languages. The culture is efficient, multicultural and generally respectful, with a strong emphasis on punctuality and practical communication. Public transport is excellent, although housing and daily expenses—especially rent—can be high. Popular neighbourhoods include Queenstown, Clementi, Buona Vista, Tiong Bahru and the city centre; several are convenient for NUS. Foreign professionals usually need an employer-sponsored work pass, such as an Employment Pass or S Pass, with eligibility depending on salary, qualifications and prevailing government criteria. Relocating workers should arrange accommodation, health insurance, banking and tax registration, and check current Ministry of Manpower rules before accepting an offer.
