Destination Guide

Singapore is a compact, safe, and highly connected island city with opportunities in universities, finance, technology, healthcare, law, logistics, tourism, and multinational companies. English is widely used at work, while Malay, Mandarin, and Tamil are also official languages. The culture blends Chinese, Malay, Indian, and international influences, reflected in festivals, neighbourhoods, and excellent hawker food. Public transport is efficient, and most areas are easy to reach by MRT or bus. The lifestyle is convenient but relatively expensive, especially for rent; living farther from the city centre can reduce costs. Postdoctoral researchers normally need an appropriate work pass arranged with the university, commonly an Employment Pass or related professional pass, subject to government approval. Candidates should budget for housing deposits, healthcare, transport, and daily expenses, and verify current immigration rules before relocating. Singapore’s warm, humid climate requires lightweight clothing and adaptation to frequent rain.
