Destination Guide

Singapore offers strong opportunities in education, technology, finance, healthcare, research, communications and regional business, although competition is high and employers usually expect relevant qualifications and experience. The culture is multicultural, efficient and relatively formal at work, with English widely used alongside Mandarin, Malay and Tamil. Life is convenient: public transport is excellent, healthcare is high quality, and food ranges from hawker centres to international restaurants. Housing is the main expense, especially near central districts, while commuting from outer neighbourhoods can reduce costs. Foreign professionals generally need an employer-sponsored Employment Pass, subject to salary and eligibility requirements; other passes apply to different skill levels and family situations. New arrivals should arrange housing, banking, insurance and tax registration, and check current visa rules with Singapore’s Ministry of Manpower. Singapore’s tropical climate is hot and humid year-round, with frequent rain.
