PADI OWSI

Job Description

The PADI OWSI role requires an active PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor certification, current first-aid and CPR training, medical fitness to dive, professional liability insurance, and a strong record of safe diving. Experience teaching and guiding divers in resort or tropical conditions is preferred. The successful candidate should deliver engaging PADI courses, conduct certified and guided dives, complete safety briefings and paperwork, maintain equipment responsibly, and provide excellent guest service. Candidates are expected to be professional, patient, adaptable, safety-conscious, and comfortable working with international guests. English communication skills are normally essential; additional languages and knowledge of local marine life are valuable. The role may also involve sales support, boat operations, and helping maintain the dive centre’s service standards.

Company Info

PADI, the Professional Association of Diving Instructors, is one of the world’s largest recreational diving education and certification organizations. Founded in 1966, it supports a global network of dive centres, resorts, instructors, dive professionals, and divers. PADI develops standardized training programs ranging from beginner courses to professional-level certifications, including the Open Water Scuba Instructor qualification. Its mission combines diver education, safe and responsible diving, and ocean conservation through initiatives such as PADI AWARE. PADI itself generally establishes training standards and supports affiliated operators, while the day-to-day employer for an instructor may be a PADI Dive Centre, resort, or liveaboard company. In the Maldives, PADI-affiliated operations commonly provide courses, guided reef dives, excursions, and marine experiences for international visitors.

Destination Guide

The Maldives offers strong opportunities for dive instructors, guides, boat crew, resort staff, marine educators, and hospitality professionals. Jobs are concentrated in private-island resorts, local-island dive centres, and liveaboards, with excellent visibility, manta rays, whale sharks, channels, and coral reefs. Resort life is international and structured, while local islands are more affordable and closely connected to Maldivian culture. Islam is central to daily life, so modest clothing and respect for local customs are important outside resort areas; alcohol is generally restricted to tourist resorts and liveaboards. Instructors should expect warm weather, ocean-based work, shared accommodation, and limited access to city amenities on remote islands. Foreign employees normally require an employer-sponsored work visa or employment approval; tourists cannot legally work. Employers often arrange permits, flights, accommodation, meals, and medical checks, but these details should be confirmed before accepting an offer.
