Destination Guide

Sri Lanka is a tropical island with strong opportunities in hotels, resorts, restaurants, tourism, aviation, technology, education, and business services. Colombo is the country’s main commercial centre and offers the widest range of hospitality jobs, while coastal and hill-country resorts provide seasonal and destination-based work. Sri Lankan culture is diverse, shaped by Sinhalese, Tamil, Muslim, and colonial influences, with Buddhist, Hindu, Islamic, and Christian traditions. Life is generally sociable and family-oriented, with affordable local food, beaches, mountains, wildlife, and efficient bus and train connections. English is widely used in hotels, although learning basic Sinhala or Tamil is useful. Foreign workers normally need an employer-sponsored work or residence visa and should confirm requirements with the Sri Lankan Department of Immigration and Emigration before travelling. Relocation costs, accommodation, medical cover, meals, transport, and service-charge arrangements should be clarified with the employer.
