Destination Guide

Langkawi is a relaxed Malaysian archipelago known for beaches, rainforests, waterfalls, mangroves and duty-free shopping. Hospitality, tourism, food and beverage, spa, transport and watersports provide the main employment opportunities, especially at resorts and during busy travel periods. The culture is predominantly Malay and Muslim, while the island welcomes visitors and workers from many countries; modest dress and respect for local customs are appreciated. Lifestyle is slower and more nature-focused than Kuala Lumpur, with island-hopping, kayaking, diving, hiking and sunset dining available. Langkawi has an international airport, clinics, supermarkets and schools, although specialist services are more limited than on the mainland. Foreign nationals generally need an employer-sponsored Malaysian work permit before starting employment. Employers commonly arrange the necessary approvals, but candidates should confirm visa, accommodation, transport, medical coverage and contract terms before relocating.
