Destination Guide

The United Kingdom offers strong opportunities for doctors, biomedical scientists, nurses, technology specialists and other healthcare professionals. Its culture is diverse and generally professional, with cities offering museums, music, sport, historic landmarks and international communities. Birmingham provides relatively good access to employment, universities, transport links and a broad range of housing, although living costs vary considerably by area. The UK has a temperate climate, excellent public services and the NHS, but housing and childcare can be expensive. Overseas doctors normally need GMC registration, verification of qualifications and evidence of English proficiency. Eligible NHS positions may support a Health and Care Worker visa, which usually requires an approved sponsor and certificate of sponsorship. Before relocating, candidates should check registration, visa, taxation, pension, healthcare and right-to-work requirements. The UK is well connected by rail and air, and relocation support may sometimes be available from the employing Trust.
