Job Description

The Head Chef will lead the kitchen team in a care home, preparing nutritious, appealing meals that meet residents’ dietary, medical and personal requirements. Responsibilities include menu planning, food ordering, stock control, kitchen supervision, staff scheduling and maintaining high standards of cleanliness and food safety. Candidates should have professional cooking experience, ideally in a care, hospitality or similar environment, together with knowledge of food hygiene, allergens and special diets. Strong organisation, leadership and communication skills are essential. The successful candidate is expected to care about residents’ wellbeing, work reliably as part of a wider care team and adapt menus to individual preferences while operating within budgets and regulatory standards.

Company Info

Barchester Healthcare is one of the United Kingdom’s major providers of residential care, nursing care, dementia care and respite services. The organisation operates care homes across England, Scotland and Wales, supporting older people and individuals with complex care needs. Its services are delivered by multidisciplinary teams that include nurses, care assistants, hospitality staff, activities teams and support professionals. Food and dining are important parts of the resident experience, so chefs are expected to provide safe, nutritious and enjoyable meals tailored to individual needs. Barchester promotes person-centred care, dignity, wellbeing and professional development. Working for the company can offer opportunities within a large care network, although conditions, benefits and exact pay may vary between homes and vacancies.

Destination Guide

The United Kingdom offers employment opportunities across healthcare, social care, hospitality, catering, technology, finance and skilled trades. It has a diverse culture, historic towns, lively cities and strong regional traditions, with excellent public transport in many areas. Lifestyle costs vary considerably: London and southern England are generally expensive, while parts of Wales, northern England and Scotland can be more affordable. Employees usually receive statutory holiday entitlement and access to the NHS, subject to immigration status and residency rules. Overseas applicants need the appropriate visa before starting work. A Skilled Worker visa normally requires an eligible occupation, an approved sponsor and a qualifying salary; care-home chef positions may not always meet sponsorship criteria, so applicants should check the official UK Government list and vacancy details. Relocation involves arranging accommodation, a National Insurance number, banking, transport and right-to-work documentation.
