Kuala Lumpur and nearby Selangor are the main employment centers, while Penang and Johor also have growing professional markets. The country is culturally diverse, with Malay, Chinese, Indian and indigenous influences reflected in food, festivals, languages and daily life. Living costs are generally lower than in Singapore or major Western cities, although central Kuala Lumpur housing can be expensive. Malaysia’s tropical climate, beaches and islands such as Langkawi, Tioman and Perhentian provide easy weekend escapes.
