Destination Guide

Japan is an island nation made up of four main islands—Honshu, Hokkaido, Kyushu, and Shikoku—plus many smaller islands. Tokyo, on Honshu, offers the broadest opportunities in banking, technology, consulting, manufacturing, and international business; Osaka, Nagoya, and Fukuoka are also important employment centers. Japanese workplaces value punctuality, preparation, respect, teamwork, and careful communication, although global firms often have more international cultures. The lifestyle is safe and convenient, with excellent public transport, diverse food, seasonal festivals, and access to mountains, beaches, and hot springs. Housing and commuting in Tokyo can be expensive. Foreign professionals normally need an employer-sponsored work visa, with eligibility depending on qualifications and job duties; a Certificate of Eligibility is commonly obtained before arrival. Relocation planning should cover housing guarantors, health insurance, resident registration, taxes, banking, and language support. Basic Japanese remains valuable for daily life and many local workplaces.
