Destination Guide

Penang Island is one of Malaysia’s strongest hospitality and tourism destinations, with opportunities in hotels, restaurants, events, tourism, retail and guest services. George Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, combines colonial architecture, Chinese, Malay and Indian traditions, vibrant festivals and famous street food. Life is generally relaxed, with beaches, hills, shopping centres and good dining, although traffic and humidity can be challenging. English is widely used in hotels, while Malay and Mandarin are also valuable. Foreign applicants normally need an employer-sponsored Employment Pass, and the company must meet Malaysian immigration and salary requirements before work begins. Candidates should confirm visa arrangements, accommodation, transport, medical coverage and relocation support with the employer. Rental costs vary by area, with Batu Ferringhi and Tanjung Bungah popular near resorts, while George Town offers broader urban amenities. Malaysia’s tropical climate requires preparation for heat and heavy rain.
