Destination Guide

Hong Kong is a compact, highly connected destination with strong opportunities in hospitality, tourism, retail, finance, technology, events and international business. Although commonly called an island city, it includes Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and the New Territories, as well as outlying islands. The culture blends Cantonese traditions with British and international influences; Cantonese is widely spoken, while English is common in professional settings and Mandarin is useful. Lifestyle is energetic, urban and convenient, with excellent public transport, diverse food, hiking trails, beaches and busy nightlife. Rent can be expensive, especially near Central and major business districts. Overseas employees normally need an employer-sponsored employment visa under Hong Kong’s General Employment Policy and must meet qualification and salary requirements. A valid job offer, passport, proof of qualifications and supporting documents are typically required. Relocation planning should include housing, healthcare, tax, banking and visa-dependent arrangements.
