Hong Kong is a highly connected international city made up of Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and the New Territories, with many outlying islands nearby. Job opportunities are concentrated in hotels, restaurants, retail, finance, logistics, technology and professional services. Cantonese is widely used, while English is common in tourism and international workplaces. The lifestyle is energetic and convenient, with excellent public transport, varied food, shopping, hiking trails and beaches, although housing is expensive and space is limited. For most overseas employees, a confirmed job offer is required before applying for an employment visa under Hong Kong’s General Employment Policy. Employers normally support the application, and applicants need suitable qualifications or experience. Relocating staff should budget for rent, transport, healthcare, deposits and daily expenses. New arrivals should arrange accommodation, open a local bank account, obtain an identity card and understand employment, tax and visa conditions.
