Destination Guide

Hong Kong is a compact, energetic destination combining a global business centre with traditional neighbourhoods, mountains, beaches and outlying islands. Job opportunities are strongest in hospitality, finance, retail, aviation, technology, education and professional services, with hotels offering roles for both local and international candidates. Cantonese is widely spoken, while English is common in business and tourism; Mandarin is also useful. Life is convenient and fast-paced, supported by excellent public transport, but accommodation can be expensive, especially on Hong Kong Island and Kowloon. Popular quieter areas include Lantau, Sai Kung and the New Territories. Foreign employees generally need an employment visa sponsored by their employer, usually through the General Employment Policy, and must meet qualification and salary requirements. Relocating involves arranging accommodation, insurance, banking and a Hong Kong identity card after approval.
