Destination Guide

Malaysia offers varied opportunities for hospitality professionals, particularly in Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Langkawi, Kota Kinabalu and other resort destinations. Island locations such as Langkawi and Penang provide a relaxed lifestyle, beaches, outdoor activities and a strong tourism economy, while also having international schools, restaurants and established expatriate communities. Malaysian culture is multicultural, with Malay, Chinese, Indian and indigenous influences reflected in food, festivals, language and daily life. English is widely used in hotels and tourist areas, although learning basic Malay is helpful. Living costs are generally moderate, but island accommodation and transport can be higher than on the mainland. Foreign employees normally need an employer-sponsored employment pass, and should not begin work before approval. The employer generally handles sponsorship, while candidates must provide passports, qualifications and medical or background documents. Check current immigration rules before relocating.
