Destination Guide

Indonesia offers strong opportunities for chefs and hospitality professionals, particularly in Bali, Java, Lombok and other established resort destinations. Bali is the most international option, with a lively expatriate community, excellent restaurants, beaches, wellness businesses and year-round tourism. Lombok and smaller islands offer a quieter lifestyle, while Jakarta and Surabaya provide larger urban job markets. Indonesian culture values community, respect, family and religious traditions, with significant regional differences in food, language and customs. Living costs vary: Bali resort areas can be expensive, while local neighborhoods and smaller islands are generally more affordable. Foreign employees normally need employer sponsorship and an appropriate work permit and limited-stay visa; working on a tourist visa is not permitted. Confirm current immigration rules with Shangri-La and the Indonesian authorities. Employers may provide accommodation, meals, insurance, flights or relocation assistance, depending on the contract.
